ISA003 - Isamu Honeymoon x Isamu Katame (Tam) - Tamoons

Mating 21st September - Birth 14th August 2014 (day 22) - in partnership with Lisa of Lovecraft rats

Honeymoon was mated to her brother Tam (Isamu Katame). This is a close inbreed in order to strengthen a number of core 'tabi' traits. Honeymoon is topaz, and was initially discounted from our breeding plans due to the potential health problems associated with the red-eye dilute (RED) gene - particularly issues around clotting and coagulation. However, she has developed into a strikingly fit and beautiful doe with a lovely mellow, bomb proof temperament, and she is licky and loving and enjoys spending time with people. Tam is a nice long-bodied agouti top-ear buck with a beautiful head and expression. He has a very friendly and steady personality, and is a little more gentle and sensitive where Honeymoon is more likely to steam ahead! On balance, we judge the merits of this combination to be of significant value to our longer-term breeding aims.

The safety of the doe is of course of utmost concern to us, and because of the potential issues to do with her variety, we chose to test Honeymoon's clotting function by having a blood sample lab analysis. Her coagulation was found to work normally, so to the best of our knowledge there should not be any increased risk to her associated with birthing and blood loss (above that of any other doe).

Honeymoon gave birth to 13 lovely babies a couple of days earlier than expected, so early her cage mates hadn't moved out of the birth tank yet! Unfortunately 2 of the babies were rejected and clearly had something wrong with them, but the other 11 thrived and despite being the tiniest newborns either me or Lisa had seen they grew into big chunky adults. Honeymoon was an amazingly relaxed mum, as happy to nurse on me as in the cage and remarkably tolerant of her babies exploring and getting up to no good.  All the babies were top eared agouti's (carrying RED) but we had 2 surprises, 2 of the girls had little Irish markings too.
