Rat Information and Care Guide

Rats! That simple word can be interpreted many different ways by many different people.  To some it’s an exclamation when something unintended happens, to another a word for vermin.  To a growing majority it’s a word filled with the promise of many happy moments with their much loved pets.  No other animal provokes a more varied range of emotions from loathing to love, from fear to friendship.   Humans and rats have travelled side by side for many hundreds of years spreading to cover most of the globe, where you can find people you can find rats.  In many ways we have much in common for no other mammal has spread so widely nor with such determination.  Indeed we share much genetically in common with our little furry friends, so much so that they have widely been used for scientific testing on our behalf.  This site is aimed at informing you a little more about these wonderful creatures allowing you to understand them better and if you have fallen into their trap, care for them as your pets.

I have kept rats for many years and have watched the fancy grow from small beginnings to the point where more and more is known about our rats thanks in particular to a growing internet presence.  You can now visit hundreds of websites dedicated to rats and many give useful, if sometimes conflicting advice.  This site is aimed at giving a good overview of what is known along with presenting as unbiased as possible view of the various debates currently happening in the fancy.  This site was also written to compliment the large number of basic rat books out there.  Many of these books are aimed at an American market specifically and have out of date or poor information and advice.  This site aims to fill in some of the gaps those left and give as broad a picture as possible on what is currently known about our furry friends.  Where there are currently disagreements both sides will be presented as fairly as I can (bearing in mind I am human and am coloured by my own opinions too) to enable you to make your own informed decision.
This series of pages are aimed at covering as much of the basics of rat care as possible.  It is worth noting that rat care is constantly evolving and improving so this site will only represent some of the knowledge out there and may be somewhat out of date, depending on how good I am at maintaining it.
